homes. All-Chroma presents an interview with Soraya Esmail owner of
Soraya's Interiors, one the GTA's top kitchen design studios.
All-Chroma: Welcome Soraya, it is good of you to spare time from your schedule.
Soraya: Thank-you I am happy to be here.
All-Chroma: What motivated you to start this type of business?
Soraya: With my background in interior design, I am able to visualize, plan and design a kitchen. The process of taking my vision and turning it into reality is exciting for me. Planning kitchens is a way to highlight my designing abilities and is most challenging.
All-Chroma: Designing kitchens involve many skills and trades. Where do you start?
Soraya: I start by planning the kitchen layout. This is the beginning of the puzzle and the main point of decision making. Once the design is complete, the other aspects of the puzzle fall into place, such as cabinets/flooring/ lighting etc. The components are then ordered and installed. The final touches and accessories are decided at the end.
All-Chroma: What involvement does your customer have in selecting materials and design.
Soraya: The clients are heavily involved in making the decisions. I make recommendations and work with them and their budget in a collaborative environment. I advise my clients of what looks good and will work.
All-Chroma: In painting, it is a lot easier if the couple is in agreement, with regards to choice, colour and budget. How do you deal with disagreements, in kitchen design.
Soraya: This is an interesting question. As a project manager I give my recommendations to the client. Having worked with the them and understanding their taste and requirements a common ground is usually reached. The final decision still lies with the client.
All-Chroma: What are some of the trends you see gaining popularity?
Soraya: Many trends and fads come and go. I design to the personality of the clients, their lifestyle and the style of the home.
All-Chroma: Is there something in kitchen design that the guys would find of particular interest?
Soraya: If they are interested in cooking then the whole process would be of interest to them, otherwise functionality and budget would be of interest to them.
All-Chroma: How long does it take to prepare all the planning and get to the fun stuff, the construction?
Soraya: Depending on the size of the project and the details required determines the time frame.
